2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

May cause gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Eye

Causes eye irritation.

Skin

Prolonged and/or repeated contact may cause irritation and/or dermatitis. May cause skin sensitisation, an allergic reaction, which becomes evident upon re-exposure to the material.

Inhaled

Causes respiratory tract irritation.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

No data available

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Seek medical attention.

Eye

Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention.

Skin

Seek medical attention. Flush skin thoroughly with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.

Inhaled

Remove victim from exposure to fresh air immediately. If NOT breathing apply artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult administer oxygen. Seek medical attention if effects persist.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Prolonged inhalation of cobalt dust, fume or mist containing cobalt may cause serious respiratory illness. There are references in literature associating cobalt with interstitial fibrosis, a disease which can be fatal. Allergic or hypersensitive persons may develop a skin reaction or obstructive lung disease.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral LD50 = 582 mg/kg (Rat) Dermal LD50 = not available Inhalation LC50 = not available

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

The following exposure limit is recommended by Worksafe : Cobalt, metal dust & fume (as Co) : TWA 0.05 mg/m3 - Sensitiser.

3.2 Engineering Controls

Ensure adequate local or general exhaust ventilation to maintain airborne concentrations of dust, vapour or fumes below the standards.

3.3 Personal Protection

Exclude from exposure allergic or hypersensitive persons. If regularly exposed to dust have periodic medical exams. Avoid prolonged or repeated exposures. Wear appropriate respiratory protection for specific environment. Wear PVC gloves and boots, cotton overalls ro protect skin and clothing, safety goggles and other clothing to minimise exposure. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before work breaks, eating, drinking, smoking or using toilet facilities.

3.4 Flammability

Material is non-flammable.
